Congressional High Priority Corridor Designation
for the River of Trade Corridor

The Congressional High Priority Corridor designation of a significant portion of the River of Trade Corridor was achieved in the surface transportation reauthorization legislation, H.R. 3, titled the Safe, Accountable, Flexible, Efficient Transportation Equity Act: A Legacy for Users (SAFETEA-LU). This legislation was signed into law by President George W. Bush on August 10, 2005.  Click here for the text of the designation.

High Priority Corridors are defined as specifically designated highway corridors, which bear national significance as a result of their role in international trade, and are therefore potentially eligible to receive increased federal funding. The goal of providing additional funding for such trade corridors is to efficiently integrate transportation infrastructure with manufacturing, international trade and economic development.

Today, the River of Trade Corridor Coalition has made it a priority to achieve a Congressional High Priority Corridor designation for the entire River of Trade Corridor, including the western segment of the corridor from California, through Arizona and New Mexico, to Texas, as well the segments of the corridor that are currently undesignated.

The Congressional High Priority Corridor designation for the River of Trade Corridor reads, "In Texas, Interstate Route 20 from Interstate Route 35E in Dallas County, east to the intersection of Interstate Route 635, north to the intersection of Interstate Route 30, northeast through Texarkana to Little Rock, Arkansas, Interstate Route 40 northeast from Little Rock east to the proposed Interstate Route 69 corridor." The River of Trade Corridor Congressional Caucus, chaired by U.S. Representative Ralph Hall, provided their full support for this designation. In addition, U.S. Representative Eddie Bernice Johnson was incredibly supportive of the designation, and included it among her top priorities in the transportation bill. The High Priority Corridor designation also received support from Harris County Judge Robert Eckels, on behalf of the Alliance for I-69 Texas. The Alliance for I-69 Texas and the River of Trade Corridor Coalition have shown reciprocal support for each entity's goals and objectives.
